Interview to photographer Alex Korolkovas over his Crepax's Valentina tribute

Old passions die hard, even more so with artists. Photographer Alex Korolkovas knows it well. Recently, he re-created a story that began in the late 80s when he was introduced by a friend to the 1960s Italian comics by Guido Crepax, and fell in love with its main character, Valentina. "It's more than the narrative; it’s aesthetics, sensuality, insight and the contrast of her fragility versus her fortitude that caught me."

Photographing the model Barbara Nogueira, Korolkovas finally gave life to his Valentina. Once the viewer is in front of it, it is impossible to overlook the significance of Korolkovas’ VALENTINA.

Born in 1969 in São Paulo (Brazil), Korolkovas graduated with a degree in advertising at the Methodist University of São Paulo. In 1992, at the beginning of his career as a photographer, he went to California where he studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and developed his craft assisting several world renowned image-makers including erotic photographer Earl Miller.

When he returned to Brazil he shot several advertising campaigns for TVA, OESP, Nazca, Alumni, Harley-Davidson fashion and Suzuki. In 2004, he ranked “Top 10 New Fashion Photographers” on “Casa dos Criadores” fashion project. And in 2006, he was nominated for “Editora Abril” photography awards with a photo essay for VIP Magazine.

His fashion clients are some of the elite designers at São Paulo Fashion Week, including Reinaldo Lourenço, Gloria Coelho, Pedro Lourenço, Cecilia Echenique, CAVALERA, Acqua Studio, Douglas Harris and Bridal Couture’s top designer Lucas Anderi.

He currently spends time between São Paulo and Miami and collaborates with the magazines Bridestyle, Trip, My Lifestyle Magazine (US), Vip, Inked, Mixmag, Maxim, Sexy, Sax, and Vogue as well as international publications such as Stern (Germany), Nerve (NY), and DP Photographer (Portugal)

Entrevista/Interview

How did you find Crepax work first? What did it fascinated you in it?

I saw Crepax work over a collection of comics of a friend of mine more than 20 years ago, he had 3 Valentina’s books that were published at Brasil on the 80’s. I was intrigued immediately by his artwork and Valentina’s beauty, her sexy looks being classic at the same time, on the sexuality that was all over the character. It was the first time that I saw erotic comics being also really artistic and authorial. They were real different, something that I’ve never seen before.

Crepax was a visionary and inspired himself on Godard movies, particularly on his fetish actress Ana Karina as well as Louise Brooks and his wife Luisa Crepax to create Valentina. What do you think that this character has to gather people since the 60’s?

There’s a mystery over Valentina looks that intrigues me, she’s special, it’s difficult to put on words the fascination that she gives. She has a charisma that goes on forever, like seeing someone from the future on the present, she’s really ahead of her time.

How did the idea to make a tribute to Valentina with photography came into your mind?

When I first read Valentina, I was beginning my work as a photographer, later I moved to California, where I sayed 11 years, Valentina was stuck on my mind by the visual richness that she represented, when I came back to Brasil in 2002, I’ve found her books again and I started thinking on a photo shooting inspired on her as a model. At that time I started searching for the perfect model for her.

IIA: Foi fácil trabalhares com a Bárbara Nogueira neste tributo?
Was it easy for you to start working with Barbara Nogueira on this tribute?

Barbara was a suggestion from a great friend of mine that worked on make-up,he told me that Barbara had Valentina’s face. I had already made some works with her before and she was a great professional. She fell immediately in love with the character, I even started calling her Valentina. She gave herself body and soul to the character. I gathered an amazing team to do the photos, make-up, hairdresser, fashion producer, all did a previous research on the character. On the shooting day, we spent all day taking pictures in the studio, Barbara was wonderful, I’ve made more than 2000 pictures with several changes on the set and existed a wonderful synergy with us, I glued on the set several pages from Crepax books as reference, some pictures were made literally inspired on some drawings, others were created at that time.

I always thought that Valentina’s path were on a crossroad with Hugo Pratt’s Corto Maltese, she even is mentioned on the book “fable of venice?” as the “Milano beauty” and the letters between Crepax and Hugo Pratt show this aspect. Are you a corto maltese fan as well?

To tell you the truth, I never entered deeply into Crepax works besides Valentina, it’s really difficult to find his books at Brasil, one time I’ve found his “Dracula” that I’ve bought in an used store and another time a French edition of “Valentina assassine” in a book store. I’m not familiar with Hugo Pratt’s works.

What caught your attention on Crepax works in the stories and the art?

As an image artist, I was really fond of the drawings, the art and surrealism in Crepax works, I could only read the first books that were published on Portuguese, even so, I’m never tired of eyeing and appreciate each page as an unique and amazing art work.

What caught your attention on Crepax works in the stories and the art?

Valentina has a charisma beyond logical explanations, something that take us into her imaginary, her androgynous look being at the same time feminine, her sensuality that grab us from the beginning until the end, I never saw another erotic cartoon that made me feel this fascinated.

As I’ve previously told you, I’ll use a photo from this tribute of yours to Crepax’s Valentina on the preface for the first volume of Fantagraphiccollection being published this year on November.

It’ll be a pleasure and an honor to participate with my tribute on a book with Valentina’s by Crepax. It’ll confirm my passion over this character and will immortalize my work with the great maestro Guido Crepax by my side in order for other generations to meet this character and Crepax works.

Do you have planned more exhibitions with this tribute on other countries and with other models?

Pretendo levar a Valentina a muitos outros eventos e exposições.
At this moment, I’m organizing an exhibition at a gallery on Wynwood, Miami. I aim to take my tribute of Valentina by Crepax to other events and exhibitions. On 2014, I’ve made an exhibition at São Paulo, Brasil where it was a success among people and I’m really proud to introduce Valentina’s by Crepax to a lot of people that did knew over her existence. I also decided to make some rehearsals with several models simultaneously that could be Valentina’s models.

Being Crepax universe so erotic, dreamy and seductive. On your opinion which is the main aspect of these three that makes Crepax works essential?

For me the erotic aspect’s essential. Crepax’s a master on Valentina’s sensuality, she’s extremely erotic without being as well chic. On my opinion, Crepax puts erotic comics at a pantheon with Valentina character.

I know that you live on the United States at Miami. Could you please tell us if you talk over this work of yours there and if people like it there?

I’m going to tell you an interesting story that happened with me when I arrived at Miami, on the first night that I went for a walk with some friends in Wynwood, I was at a bar called TSL (The Social Lubricant), while entering there, I saw two huge collages on the wall with Crepax’s Valentina, being one exactly like the one that I’ve a tattoo on my right arm. I saw that as a sign of being at the right place and at the right time. I showed my tattoo to the bar manager and he were friends from that exact moment and he even invited me to show my work there, which I’ll do very soon. Crepax’s Valentina has a huge universal power and will be accepted in all the places that it’ll be showed; the world needs to know more ofCrepax’s Valentina.

Being you a visual artist, what can you tells us of the magic of transforming a mere image on a masterpiece?

This is a really interesting question and hard to answer, there’s a thin line between a good image and a masterpiece, of course that there’s a lot of stuff all over the world being made that people call masterpieces. Even so, for me an image must pass the period and space of its creation. It must cause an emotional reaction, it must grab our feelings, excite them while provoking them. A true masterpiece grabs your attention, but this experience’s different from people to people, because there’s not only one way to see it, it’s our experience and visual repertory, that says what’s for us, a masterpiece. And for me Crepax’s Valentina can have the same impact as Mona Lisa.

Thanks for your time and support.

Working with Fantagraphics - Guido Crepax collection - 2015

Writing for the first book for a collection to be published on the U.S.A for Fantagraphics books about the complete works by Guido Crepax is great.

Valentina

This idea came into my mind before making an exhibition dedicated to this master of Comic books on the X International festival of comics in Beja, where several artists from Portugal and other countries (with the help of Caterina Crepax) made tributes to this artist, names such as: Pasquale Frisenda, Mastantuono, Sergio Toppi from Italy and Ricardo Drumond, Derradé, Diogo Carvalho, Tiago Araujo, Osvaldo Medina from Portugal and Brazilian artist Sama had an exhibition of them along originals by Guido Crepax (that we're meticulously picked by Crepax heirs and myself) with his creations: Anita, Belinda,Valentina and Bianca as well as adapted literature masterpieces such Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Justine by Marquis de Sade, Franz Kafka's Process among others for this international comics festival.

While picturing on my mind these artworks on a publishing company, immediately came into my mind, Fantagraphics Books that knows how to do perfect comics with a genuine love for them in terms of editions, books and artists, being one of the best publishers ever on my opinion.

American readers will have the complete works of this maestro in english on an almost A3 format, hardcover with more than 440 pages each book.

On this collection of which I'm consultant editor will exist prefaces and essays by myself, testimonies from Crepax sons: Caterina, Antonio and Giacomo, articles and essays by Tim Pilcher, expert on erotica comics and also by Paul Gravett that's one of the most connoisseurs Comic book experts in the world.

Anita
Bianca

Belinda

Seeing Crepax works on the american market on a publishing company such as Fantagraphics is really great, since readers from all over the world can now acess to masterpieces never before published on the United states of America such as his creations Valentina, Bianca, Belinda.

For me it'll be a great honour to make part of the history of an artist like Guido Crepax and my deepest thanks go to Crepax sons: Caterina, Antonio and Giacomo and Fantagraphics owner Gary Groth for believing on the potential of a collection such as this and to all the artists that made tributes to this comic book maestro character Valentina.

I'm certain that will be the best published book collection dedicated to this amazing artist born in Milan, Italy

Exhibition of iconic comics character Valentina and other works by Guido Crepax with his sons at Beja comics con 2014 with the support of Invicta Indie Arts

Exhibition - Valentina by Guido Crepax with Antonio and Caterina Crepax
Invicta Indie Arts

While I was planning on doing this work, several ideas appeared on my mind, like making a great homage to Guido Crepax works, characters and stories on my country at Beja comics con of this year and it was amazing seeing this dream come true.

Valentina, Bianca, Anita and Belinda were characters that filled my mind with dreams and dreams since I was a little child, when I read their stories at Linus and Charlie mensuel. I know that the erotic aspect of the characters influenced me as well, but I saw them as art made way ahead of their time by the hand and mind of Guido Crepax.

All the feminine characters were free and with dreams while being female and this was amazing at the time and still is nowadays on the XXI century. Even now when I read or see a drawing by Crepax with this character one can see the influence that he gave to lots of artists like Jim Steranko among many others.

I know that Hugo Pratt really admired Guido Crepax like other artists did (like you can read on the interview that I made to Crepax family on this blogue).

It was an hard work but I loved doing it since I was moved by dreams.

Antonio and Caterina told to the audience at Beja on a conversation with me and Brazilian artist Sama (a video that soon will be posted on youtube with parts of it) that his father when was doing literary adaptations from writers such as: George Bataille, Sacher Masoch, Franz Kafka, Edgar Allan Poe, Karen Blixen, Marquis de Sade, Mary Shelley among many others, that their father didn't made only an adaptation, he put more plot and story into the books that he read on prose.

They also told me that he imagined on his mind games with historical battles from Napoleon to the Czars and that he made them physically and gave them to his children to play, so when we see Valentina with armours and hats, we see Crepax's mind in action putting his characters with the history itself.

He was also really fond of fables and tales and another thing that Antonio and Caterina told me was that their mother: Luisa Crepax created a language for the men from the subterraneans at Valentina stories based on german language that she learned at school mixed with her own vision of how german sounded to her.

It was excellent seeing Guido Crepax works since 1965 and in huge format and all his cinematic skills and chiaroscuro technique and how he released all his characters from the boxes that usually (and at that time even more) "trap" the stories on a frame.  His pages were really free and we could see on them, lots of freedom on the story and pace while reading them and on our minds with his style of drawing we could imagine lots of music on it.

Portugal has a nice exhibition of Guido Crepax works with 18 originals with his characters: Valentina, Bianca, Anita, Belinda and some pages of his literary adaptations at Beja comics con 2014 and you can see there an avant garde man.

Huge thanks also to Paul Gravett for all the support that he gave me (even having his mother at the hospital) and with his "V for valentina" idea, to Luisa Sequeira, Sama, Lama-Escriptorio Graphico, André Azevedo and Tiago Araújo for all the support; to Sérgio Rocha once again over making music for Guido Crepax exhibition, to Paulo Monteiro for helping put my ideas on practise at Beja Comics con that is one of the best comic cons in the world, to my wife and princess Paula Fonseca, my muse kitty Ilvie and last but not least huge thanks to Antonio and Caterina Crepax for sharing the memories that they have of their father with me and the people that were at Beja on 31st May and 1st June 2014, without their open minds, I couldn't turn this dream into reality.

What can I say more?

The exhibition continues until 15 October at Beja - Portugal, so if you're near there, go visit it since it's an excellent opportunity to see an iconic character on comics art form with an individual exhibition.
