More info about multimedia exhibition/project at boémia caffe in Porto-January 2017

Dear artists and friends,
I've decided to post here a second part of the video of myself showing you all a bit of the city where I live in and where I was born while reciting a post that I've wrote here in this blogue, being this direct comunication.
Later, I'll unite it with the first part and make a post about all this exhibition/project about identity.
I'll also make another video with all the excellent self-portraits that all of you sent me in order for this exhibition to happen like a sort of exchange of who we're in this life with or without social networks.
In this video, I've decided to put two songs named "thousands are sailing" by Irish band The Pogues, since the song talks a bit about  emigration and why we must do it and it's one of my favourite songs ever, the other song that serves as background music is by American band Explosions in the Sky "Yasmin, the light" that I've seen live in Porto some years ago and since I love the post rock movement without words, I've thought that perhaps some light can be given to me regarding this subject that's identity and direct comunication.
I'm putting here an excellent self-portrait by Spanish artist Santiago Sequeiros, because he told me that it was done when his mother died of cancer and the power of this image really stuck in my mind, because my grandfather also died of this disease and even my late father-in-law in February 2016 (and I had to deal with it like a grown up adult must deal with a terrible disease like this, becoming sad and not mad) and Santiago's a simple guy that comunicates with everybody in a simple speech without being lame or having self pity of himself.
In other posts that I'll write in the near future, I'll use another self-portrait by another international artist or several at the same time to try to give a different emotional impact in this blogue and with some written words by me or by some of you.
I continue not understanding several things in life regarding social networks and also about freedom of speech nowadays.
Like I've written before in previous posts, I think that with social networks, it seems that we're being observed all times and if we act a bit different from how society wants us to be, people will shout at us (like we were mere lambs to slaughter), it happened to me last friday when I was stating some of my rights as a mere common human being and a person was shouting to me and telling me that I'm a real bad guy and even defaming me.
I didn't answer to the person who was shouting at me, since in my humble opinion, I comunicate only with whom I love and I'm not in this life, telling who's right or who's wrong based in some behaviour by what a person told about another person or based on a supposed psychological behaviour.
Enough about me, since some of you know that I'm in a bit in an emotional state because of the sudden loss of my kitty Ilvie due to things that I can't really understand in this society like I've stated in previous posts in this same blogue with several artworks of cats that some of the best artists in the world have send me to make an exhibition that it's finishing and that it seems from what my friend Daniel Castro and boémia caffe owner told me is being a real blast with people giving tons of feedback and asking him why this exhibition is happening and how its concept began.
So, I'll try to put some examples of social networks in nowadays normal lives in real world, if I'm in the streets of Porto or anyone of you are in the streets of the city that you live in and we start observing a woman or a man and we tell him/her that we like how they look like physically, maybe the person will tell us to fuck off (or maybe not, it depends if we're lucky or not), but if the same person upload a picture of her/him in some social network, I'm pretty sure that he/she will love to have tons of likes or comments, even if these likes or comments come from strangers, filling his/her ego with this kind of faked fame that social networks give to common and simple people.
If in the streets, we see a person that says something in a coffee shop or in the streets about the sudden loss of somebody or a pet and if we start telling them as a mere "stranger" that's passing by that "we're really sorry", I'm pretty sure that they will tell us to mind our own busyness and they will think to themselves that we're a bit lunatic.
Another common example that I observe is that if we are listening to music in public or in a private party (depending on the hour) I'm pretty sure that somebody will call the police and we'll be brought to justice because of this and in social networks we can do this all the time.
Do we've more freedom now or are we really being controlled to act this way in social networks?
Another common example about where our freedom ends is when you disconnect with somebody from social networks or real life, an individual can say in a social network that you're some sort of psychopath and that you're or were a real bad guy (like a really bad soap opera) and the circle of his/her "friends/acquaintances" becomes influenced by what a person says and they have a bad or good image of us, not knowing who we're and some of them, do start to point some fingers in the streets to us or even insulting us because of a social network rumour that's being spread in a circle of people.
If this same thing happens in real life, most people will ignore the person and think that he or she is a bit lunatic and will try to see what's wrong with him/her in his/her mind, heart or soul.
Another example is if we're going to see a movie, a play, an exhibition, a soccer game or even watching the news and we start saying in a coffee shop good or bad things about something that we watched or observed, a discussion will appear out of nowhere with people telling us how right or how wrong we're, be them friends, acquaintances or even strangers and losing a bit of our "freedom" of speech in real life, but if we do the same thing at a social network, people will think that it's our opinion and we've the right to it.
So, in my humble opinion and with some mere examples of how social networks can never be mixed in our lives (people do this often). I do try to be always the same guy in them that tries to spread a bit of direct comunication like I do in real life with all my virtues and failures (even not understanding them).
Hope that I can continue counting with your support regarding this exhibition/project by direct communicating and that you can help some people with your artworks and self-portraits having a different approach in their personal lives.

Manuel

Info about multimedia exhibition at boémia caffe with identity as a theme - Porto - January - 2017

Dear artists and friends,
When I was thinking in this exhibition about identity (and comunication) some days ago, I was a bit in a Kafkaesque state, because there are several things in the XXI Century that I really don't understand when people tell me about the great advantages of social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Tumblr, blogues or even websites (and I do use them aswell) since I know that we must filter several info from everywhere in the world wide web to organize books or be informed about what's happening in it while trying to establish direct comunication also.
I was thinking in some words by Portuguese soccer coach José Mourinho that gave a press conference after a soccer game based in the question "why?" while he was at Madrid - Spain.

This has nothing to do with soccer, but I truly believe in the power of words, so while thinking in those spoken words by Mourinho, I've decided to start question identity in the XXI century with the help of some of his words and with the help of a image drawn by Argentine artist Mister ED like a peekaboo (based in the song that appears while Mourinho is speaking in a video in this post) game while trying to Swallow (based in the British band with the same name that also appears in this post) my agony because of not understanding the power of social networks and the way that people comunicate in them.
So, I did tried to blow (based in the album of the band) a bit of some words with some self-portraits by artists that I really love and admire as human beings.
Sometimes I do believe that maybe I'm a bit "punk rock" (like the song that appears with the artists self-portraits in the video in this post) and I also thought in the power of words that Iggy Pop says (that he's reciting in the same song by Scottish band Mogwai in this post).

Based in some self-portraits by international artists from countries such as
Argentina : Mister ED, Fer Calvi, Pato Delpeche, Quique Alcatena.
Portugal : Paulo Pinto and Geral & Derradé
Spain - Miguel Almagro, Dulce Escribano, Fidel Martiñez Nadal, Gustavo Rico, Javier Gay Llorente, Joaquin Aldeguer, Jon Ander Azaola, Pedro Espinosa, Ruben Pellejero, Santiago Sequeiros (that appear in a video in this post), I'm sure that they will help people understanding some questions that in my humble opinion are real important, making this without any kind of malice, I'm pretty sure that with a little help from excellent artists artists from several countries that I admire and comunicate with and are drawing more self-portraits by themselves, perhaps we'll have a chance to understand how life and identity works (unlike Mourinho that says that we've "no chance" (in this same video in this post), in this century that we live in, because they're excellent storytellers and observers of society and people while they're drawing their stories and imagining worlds within worlds.
I really don't know if this is some kind of manifest or a quest in order to search for identity, so once again, with the help of all these excellent artists, an exhibition will be held at boémia caffe in Porto in January - 2017 to see if our exchange of ideas can comunicate directly with its customers that day in, day out visit one of the best coffee shops in my hometown and I really want to see how they react to words and self-portraits of artists who were exhibited before in this same coffee shop with their artworks (in tributes to Valentina by Guido Crepax by international artists that I've organized with the help of Caterina Crepax that I've helped curating it in this same coffee shop and other countries while being series editor of Fantagraphics Crepax collection aswell and with Cats exhibition that I've also curated due to the sudden loss of my kitten Ilvie without me understanding why and that it's having a huge impact in boémia caffe customers with their memories being triggered with images of mere cats (and I know that some of them were not only mere cats, but also artists pets aswell) and now they'll try to show a bit of who they are without any kind of masks.
You know that all of you are really important to thousands of people like myself that read comic books, books or even enjoy art, that's why I've thought in organizing this exhibition with a bit of heart and soul in it.
Editing by Duarte Aguiar
Special thanks to Daniel Castro (owner of boémia caffe) for providing his coffee shop as a space for this exhibition that maybe will have a difficult narrative to tell or maybe not.
To my kitty Ilvie for being also my muse and source of inspiration.
For sure that I'll be there observing how people react to this exhibition as a mere customer, trying to have feedback from them while direct communicating with all the amazing artists that will be exhibited in it with words, images or songs.

More info coming real soon at this blogue.

Upcoming multimedia exhibition about identity - Porto -international artists - January 2017

An exhibition about identity in Porto is coming soon with multimedia interaction and with help by international artists and self-portraits by them.
It'll be an identity game.
Most of the times I think that I'm lost, others I think that I've found myself and with past, present and future colliding themselves in the memories of the books that I've read, the movies that I've watched, the songs that I've listened to, the art that I've seen or the life that I've lived or live in the present moment make me a bit dizzy.

I know that life's hard and sometimes I wonder about several things that people tell me while communicating with me, because it seems that today we are all rushing in our lives and not thinking properly (in my humble opinion) with our brains, heart or soul.
Communicating is hard, direct comunication allow us to know a bit more of who we're and the people that we comunicate with.
Sometimes people don't understand me, others I don't understand them and we instantly lose touch while communicating.
I think that this can be due to a language barrier (I'm Portuguese) or maybe because people's lives are always filled with work to do and always in rush hour, that seems that the Apocalypse is beginning right now and that we all must have our 15 minutes of fame instantly  (like Andy Warhol predicted in the XXth century) in social networks, be it Facebook, Tumblr, Hi5, Twoo, Twitter, Whatsapp, blogues, websites or even cellphones.
I also use some of these social networks to understand how they work and how people comunicate with them (most of the times people comunicate only with images in them) and in my humble opinion we're only mere voyeurs of other people's lives and social networks gives us sometimes only a mere void, portraying us like we're in a constant conflict with our own ego, forgetting our identity and it all becomes a sort puzzle or a blur in our own minds.
So, I've thought in some simple questions about identity, like these ones:
- Where're our memories?
- Who are we?
- What's our purpose in life?
- When were we born?
- Where were we born?
- Do we belong to the city or country where we were born or are we some sort of aliens passing by in them?
- Why must everything be digital in this new era?
- Are our memories digitally gathered in a PC in a simple box, in a bunch of papers or inside our heart and soul?
Sometimes people tell me personally or by phone:
- "Have you seen what I did today? I've put it at my Facebook."

Other times people tell me about the benefits of social networks such as Instagram, Tumblr or Twitter.
I don't know what to answer lots of times, since this is not direct comunication in my point of view.
I'm only a guy that was born and lives in Porto (I'm showing a bit of this city like I've told a bit of its History in a previous post in a video with me reciting some words about it while also reading a love letter to my kitty Ilvie) and I think that I'm a simple guy. (I'm not a leader of anybody or anything), perhaps I'm trapped in this city or this country that are both my shadow, a rope or a drug that ties me to them, being myself a mere character in them aswell.
I've did some good and bad things in my life and that's it, I never was a mystery man.
I do show what I do at my personal Facebook (I also use social networks) and I share direct comunication with people in it, the same way that I do personally or at this blogue that I never wanted it to be "my blogue", but a blogue that supports who I am, what I've did or what I'll do in the future with help by other people,
At this blogue some sort of narratives/stories are linked throughout all its posts with work of some years with some of my personal life in it and with other people works aswell, be them texts, interviews, editing books, curating exhibitions, organizing comic book festivals or even making videos to simply use direct communication to some countries in order to share a bit of who I am with people from all over the world while trying to have their feedback aswell and know them a bit more through comunication and identity.

So, this is a sort of exhibition/multimedia project based in what I don't understand in present times and life, be it love (with family, friends or with a couple), friendship, love for pets (like I've did in the previous exhibition in December 2016 with my kitty Ilvie that is my inspiration muse and that was stolen from my sight recently (like it was only a mere object) after living with her 8 years or a text that I've also recited in Portuguese with another kitty that I've used to have for 3 years named Pimpolha and that can be seen also in this blogue in a video) or even companionship with people.

In my opinion, lots of people also don't have answers for these same questions.
I'll try to do some sort of narrative with this exhibition with the help of international artists that must make sense in my mind while sharing a bit of the city that I live in, that's Porto (I remember doing a spoken words performance in Portuguese with a Portuguese musician named Sérgio Rocha in 2006 in a bar in Porto as an homage to this city and that can also be seen in this blogue) and a bit of my life with all the artists/people that I can gather to have interaction by direct communicating.
Here is a link of a video made at the city of Porto with an introduction with some questions about identity, where I show a bit of the city, where I was born and live with a background song by American band Sonic Youth named Schizophrenia that was boiling in my mind while thinking on this exhibition.
Hope that this can be a good and direct exchange with me, international artists and clients of boémia caffe trying to give some answers about identity or even questioning its purpose in this century.

Entrevista exclusiva para Invicta Indie Arts al autor Argentino, Mister ED

Caros amigos y artistas,

SHORT TALES · comics appears in Ultrarradio, DVB & DopututtoMax

Me dan igual.

SUPERMAN · from my sketchbook when I was 19

JACK KIRBY · conceptual sketch,1978
